Activities for Alzheimer Patients
14/11/2008 ·
There are lots of activities that patients with Alzheimer's Disease (AD) can engage in. They need to keep their bodies healthy through the right exercise and proper diet. People with AD should be given a chance to interact with other people and engage in mental activities that will might help them cope with the disease's degenerative effects.
Causes of AD
There is no proven, specific cause for Alzheimer's Disease. There are, however, several probable causes that have different effects on different people. Age is a crucial risk factor. People are more likely to get the disease after the age of 65.
Family history and genetics might also be a factor. For instance, a rare form of the disease called Early-Onset Familial AD, which typically occurs between 30 to 60-years-old is found to be hereditary.
The most common form of AD, however, is the type that occurs late in a patient?s life with no previous history of the disease. A lot of risk factor genes may interact either with each other or with other factors that are non-genetic to cause AD. The only gene that was discovered to play a part in AD is the one that produces a form of protein known as apolipoprotein E. This gene helps in carrying cholesterol in the blood.
Scientists are also studying the role of environment, education and diet in the development of AD. They also found out that having stroke and heart disease like high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure may also increase the risk of contracting AD.
There is also evidence that physical, social and mental activities can help reduce the risk of having this disease. That is why it is best to try to get AD sufferers involved in activities, even if they are far into the disease. It is best to concentrate on tasks that focus on the skills that the patient has retained. Simple things like pouring a glass of water might be a good and comfortable way to keep AD patients active.
